How MPRE Scores Work

The MPRE reports an official scaled score from 50 to 150. NCBE uses statistical equating to account for differences in difficulty between exam forms. There is no fixed multiplier that converts correct answers into an official score. In particular, 40 correct answers out of 60 do not establish a scaled score of 100.

This calculator keeps two tasks separate: comparing a score from your official report with a jurisdiction threshold you enter, and calculating a practice accuracy percentage or a whole-answer practice target. Neither task predicts your future MPRE result.

Practice Accuracy Formula

Practice accuracy (%) = answers correct ÷ practice questions scored × 100. The correct-answer target is the question count multiplied by the target percentage, divided by 100 and rounded up to a whole answer.

For example, 40 correct answers on a 60-question practice set gives 40 ÷ 60 × 100 = 66.67% accuracy. A 70% practice target requires ceiling(60 × 0.70) = 42 correct answers. These percentages are study-planning measures, not official MPRE passing thresholds.

Compare an Official Score

Enter the scaled score printed on your NCBE report and the current score requirement for your jurisdiction. The calculator reports whether the score meets that entered number and the point difference. A score of 80 compared with an entered threshold of 85 is five scaled points below it.

Jurisdictions set their own requirements. Score age, when you take the MPRE, application deadlines and other admission conditions can also matter. A threshold comparison alone does not establish eligibility. Verify the threshold and its effective date with the jurisdiction’s bar-admission authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I multiply correct answers by 2.5?
No. That calculation does not reproduce NCBE’s examination-specific equating and can produce misleading scores.

Why does practice percent correct differ from a scaled score?
A practice percentage is a simple fraction. An official scaled score accounts for the difficulty of the exam form. The two values are different measurements and are not interchangeable.

What question count should I enter?
Enter the number of questions your practice provider actually scores. The live MPRE contains 60 questions, including 10 unscored pretest questions. Candidates cannot identify the unscored questions, so a guessed live-exam raw count cannot reliably reconstruct a scaled score.
