Net explosive weight (NEW) is the estimated mass of active pyrotechnic composition, not the total packaged or shipped weight of the fireworks. If the manufacturer provides a stated NEW or NEC for a product, use that labeled value first. This calculator is a rule-of-thumb estimator.
Net Explosive Weight Formula
NEW = 0.50 \cdot DSW + 0.25 \cdot DCW
- NEW = estimated net explosive weight
- DSW = gross weight of display shell cases
- DCW = gross weight of display cakes and candles
Use a single unit system throughout the calculation. If you enter pounds, the result is in pounds. If you enter kilograms, the result is in kilograms.

How to Calculate NEW Manually
- Record the gross weight of display shell cases.
