Night Shift Salary Formula
The following formula is used to calculate total night shift pay when the night shift differential (D) is a flat dollar amount for the entire shift (or pay period being calculated).
S = (W * H) + D
Variables:
- S is the total night shift pay/earnings for the hours being calculated
- W is the hourly wage
- H is the hours worked
- D is the total night shift differential pay for the shift/pay period (in $)
If your night shift differential is paid as an hourly add-on (for example, +$2/hour), use the Per‑Hour Differential tab. If your differential is paid as a percentage premium (for example, +10%), use the Percent Differential tab.
To calculate total pay using the flat-amount formula shown above, multiply the hourly wage by the hours worked and then add the total night shift differential for that shift/pay period.
What is a Night Shift Salary?
A “night shift salary” is often used informally to mean the total compensation (pay/earnings) a worker receives for working a night shift or a set of night hours. This total pay typically includes the regular hourly wage times the hours worked, plus an additional night shift differential. The night shift differential is extra pay given to employees who work during night hours, which can help compensate for the inconvenience and potential health impacts of working non-standard hours. Night shift pay is common in industries that operate 24/7, such as healthcare, manufacturing, and emergency services.
How to Calculate Night Shift Salary?
The following steps outline how to calculate total night shift pay.
- First, determine the hourly wage (W).
- Next, determine the number of hours worked (H).
- Next, determine the night shift differential and how it is paid (a flat amount for the shift, a per-hour premium, or a percentage premium).
- Finally, calculate total pay using the appropriate formula (or use the matching tab in the calculator above).
- After inserting the values and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
Example Problem :
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.
Hourly wage (W) = $20/hour
Hours worked (H) = 8 hours
Night shift differential (D) = $50 (a flat $50 extra amount for the shift)
