Calculate packet rate, packet count, or transfer time from any two values with units for packets, seconds, minutes, hours, pps, ppm, or pph.
Packet Rate Formula
The basic packet rate formula is:
PR = P / T
- PR = packet rate
- P = packet count
- T = time
To solve for packet count:
P = PR * T
To solve for time:
T = P / PR
The calculator converts packet count to packets, time to seconds, and packet rate to packets per second before calculating. Values must be greater than zero.
Useful Packet Rate Tables
Common packet count units:
| Unit | Meaning | Packets |
|---|---|---|
| pkt | Packets | 1 |
| kpkt | Thousand packets | 1,000 |
| Mpkt | Million packets | 1,000,000 |
| Gpkt | Billion packets | 1,000,000,000 |
Common packet rate conversions:
| Rate unit | Equivalent | In packets per second |
|---|---|---|
| pps | Packets per second | 1 pps |
| ppm | Packets per minute | ppm / 60 |
| pph | Packets per hour | pph / 3,600 |
Packet Rate Examples
If 120,000 packets are sent in 60 seconds, the packet rate is:
PR = 120000 / 60 = 2000 pps
If a stream runs at 5,000 pps for 10 minutes, first convert 10 minutes to 600 seconds:
P = 5000 * 600 = 3000000 packets
Packet rate measures packet volume, not data bandwidth. Packet size is not included in this calculation.
