Enter the length, width, desired depth, and a coverage rating (if known) into the calculator to determine the amount of playground mulch needed. If you don’t know the coverage rating, a common reference is that 1 cubic yard covers about 108 sq ft at 3 in (7.6 cm) depth (before settling/compaction).

Playground Mulch Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the amount of mulch needed for a playground when the mulch “coverage” is specified at a 3-inch (7.6 cm) depth:

 AM = (L * W * (D / 3)) / C

Variables:

  • AM is the amount of mulch needed (cubic yards or cubic meters)
  • L is the length of the playground area
  • W is the width of the playground area
  • D is the desired depth of the mulch (use the same units as the “3” in the formula; commonly inches)
  • C is the coverage area per unit volume at 3 in (7.6 cm) depth (e.g., sq ft per cubic yard or sq m per cubic meter)

To calculate the amount of mulch needed for a playground, multiply the length by the width to get area, then multiply by (desired depth ÷ 3), and divide the result by the coverage rating (at 3-inch depth). As a reference, 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet, so at 3 inches depth one cubic yard covers about 108 sq ft.

What is a Playground Mulch?

Playground mulch is a type of protective surface that is often spread around children’s play areas and equipment to provide a safer, cushioned surface. It is commonly made from shredded wood (such as engineered wood fiber), rubber, or other engineered materials designed for playground surfacing. The primary purpose of playground mulch is to reduce the risk of injuries from falls, as it can absorb impact better than hard surfaces like concrete. It can also help suppress weeds and reduce mud and dust compared with bare soil. Recommended depth depends on the material and the required fall protection for the equipment height; follow the surfacing manufacturer’s guidance and applicable playground safety standards.

How to Calculate Playground Mulch?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Playground Mulch:

  1. Measure the playground length and width and calculate the area (for example, in square feet).
  2. Choose the desired mulch depth (for example, in inches).
  3. Convert the depth to a volume-friendly unit if needed (for example, inches to feet by dividing by 12).
  4. Calculate the volume of mulch needed (for example, cubic yards): cubic yards = (area in sq ft × depth in inches) ÷ 324 (equivalently, cubic yards = (L × W × depth in feet) ÷ 27).
  5. If purchasing bags, convert the total volume to match the bag size (for example, cubic feet = cubic yards × 27, then bags = cubic feet ÷ bag volume (ft³ per bag)). If you use a bag “coverage” statement, make sure it is for the same depth you plan to install.

Example Problem:

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Area of the playground (in square feet) = 500

Desired depth of the mulch (in inches) = 3

Using cubic yards = (area × depth) ÷ 324: cubic yards = (500 × 3) ÷ 324 = 4.6296, so you would need about 4.63 cubic yards of mulch (before allowing for settling/compaction).
