Pleated Skirt Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the number of pleats needed for a pleated skirt:

N = C / (W + P)

Variables:

  • N is the theoretical number of pleats
  • C is the circumference of the waist
  • W is the visible finished width of each pleat
  • P is the gap between pleats, with one gap per pleat around the closed waist

To calculate the number of pleats needed for a pleated skirt, divide the waist circumference by the sum of the pleat width and the spacing between pleats (the calculator converts C, W, and P to consistent units). A fractional count needs an adjusted width or spacing; the planner fits a whole count. Fabric yardage assumes full adjacent pleats at 3× finished width and includes both seam edges of each panel. Enter measured shrinkage or use zero for prewashed fabric; separate waistband, fastening pieces and cutting waste are excluded.
