Shoe Size to Height Formula
The calculator works in two directions. To estimate height from a shoe size, it first converts the shoe size into a foot length, then divides that length by about 0.15:
FL = (S + 22) / 3 H = FL / 0.15
To estimate a shoe size from a known height, it reverses the same relationship, taking foot length as roughly 15 percent of height and converting that length back into a size:
FL = H * 0.15 US (men) = 3 * FL - 22
Variables:
- S is the shoe size, read as a US men’s size unless you pick another system
- FL is the estimated foot length, in inches in the formulas above
- H is the standing height, in the same unit as FL
- 0.15 is the average ratio of foot length to height (about 15 percent). The calculator uses 0.152 for men’s sizing and 0.155 for women’s sizing
Pick what you want to find at the top of the calculator. In “Height from shoe size” mode you enter a shoe size and choose US, UK, or EU, and the tool returns an estimated height in feet and inches, inches, centimeters, and meters. In “Shoe size from height” mode you enter a height and the tool returns an estimated foot length plus US, UK, and EU sizes. The sizing option sets both the ratio above and how your entry is read.
A US women’s size runs about 1.5 sizes above a men’s size for the same foot, and a UK size runs about 0.5 below US men’s. EU sizes use foot length in centimeters directly, through EU = 1.5 * (foot length in cm + 2). These conversions are approximate and shift slightly between brands.
Estimated Height by Shoe Size
This table shows the height that lines up with common US shoe sizes, using the men’s and women’s ratios. Read the size in the system that matches you, since a men’s 9 and a women’s 9 point to different heights.
| US shoe size | Men’s height | Women’s height |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 5 ft 1 in (156 cm) | 4 ft 9 in (145 cm) |
| 7 | 5 ft 4 in (162 cm) | 4 ft 11 in (150 cm) |
| 8 | 5 ft 6 in (167 cm) | 5 ft 1 in (156 cm) |
| 9 | 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) | 5 ft 3 in (161 cm) |
| 10 | 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) | 5 ft 6 in (167 cm) |
| 11 | 6 ft 0 in (184 cm) | 5 ft 8 in (172 cm) |
| 12 | 6 ft 3 in (189 cm) | 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) |
| 13 | 6 ft 5 in (195 cm) | 6 ft 0 in (183 cm) |
If you know your size in one system but not another, this table maps US, UK, and EU sizes to a foot length so you can enter the right number.
| Foot length | US (men) | US (women) | UK | EU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22 cm (8.7 in) | 4 | 5.5 | 3.5 | 36 |
| 23 cm (9.1 in) | 5 | 6.5 | 4.5 | 37.5 |
| 24 cm (9.4 in) | 6.5 | 8 | 6 | 39 |
| 25 cm (9.8 in) | 7.5 | 9 | 7 | 40.5 |
| 26 cm (10.2 in) | 8.5 | 10 | 8 | 42 |
| 27 cm (10.6 in) | 10 | 11.5 | 9.5 | 43.5 |
| 28 cm (11.0 in) | 11 | 12.5 | 10.5 | 45 |
| 29 cm (11.4 in) | 12.5 | 14 | 12 | 46.5 |
Example Problems
Example 1: Estimate height from a shoe size.
You wear a US men’s size 10 and use men’s sizing. First convert the size to a foot length: FL = (10 + 22) / 3 = 10.67 inches, which is about 27.1 cm. Then divide by the men’s ratio: H = 27.1 / 0.152 = 178 cm, or about 5 ft 10 in.
Example 2: Estimate a shoe size from height.
You are 5 ft 4 in tall, which is 64 inches, and use women’s sizing. Take foot length as 15.5 percent of height: FL = 64 * 0.155 = 9.9 inches, which is about 25.2 cm. Converting that length gives roughly a US women’s 9.5.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tell height from shoe size?
You can estimate it, but not fix it exactly. Height and foot length are correlated at about 0.6 to 0.8 in adults, which is strong enough for a useful guess and is why the link is used in forensic work. It is not exact, because two people who wear the same size can have different heights depending on their build.
How accurate is this estimate?
Treat the result as a range, not a fixed number. The foot-to-height ratio averages close to 15 percent across large groups, but any one person can sit above or below that, and shoe sizing itself varies by brand. The estimate is most reliable for fully grown adults and least reliable for children, whose feet and height change at different rates.
Does the same shoe size mean the same height for men and women?
No. Women’s sizes run about 1.5 numbers higher than men’s for the same foot length, so a women’s 9 is a shorter foot than a men’s 9 and points to a shorter height. Set the sizing option before you calculate so the tool reads your number correctly.
