Estimate calories burned during shuttle or suicide-run drills from active time or completed repetitions, or find the repetitions needed for a target total-calorie estimate.
Shuttle Run Calorie Formula
The 2024 Adult Compendium assigns 11.0 MET to forward, backward, and lateral shuttle running. This direct entry is better suited to repeated direction changes than a steady-state running-speed equation.
The model uses cumulative active running time. Rest between shuttle bouts is excluded.
What Counts as One Shuttle Repetition?
Workout definitions differ, so the calculator asks for total route distance per repetition. A 20 m out-and-back shuttle covers 40 m per complete repetition. For a suicide run, add every outbound and return segment included in one complete round.
Why Repetitions and Distance Still Need Time
The Compendium equation estimates calories from duration and body weight. Repetitions or distance alone cannot supply duration. In completed-repetition mode, enter the cumulative active time used for those reps; the calculator then reports route distance, average speed, and active seconds per repetition as supporting details.
Solving for Target Repetitions
Target mode first determines active minutes for the requested calorie amount. It then divides the target time by the typical active seconds per repetition and rounds up:

Example
For a 70 kg person, the 11-MET model produces 13.475 kcal per active minute. A 100-kcal target requires about 7.42 active minutes. At 15 active seconds per repetition, that is 29.68 repetitions, rounded up to 30. With a 40 m full route, the rounded distance is 1,200 m and estimated total calories are approximately 101.1 kcal.

The source Compendium entry covers forward, backward, and lateral shuttle running under one standardized value. The calculator does not invent separate coefficients for direction, cone spacing, or turn technique.
Shuttle Drills vs. the Beep Test
You can enter measured active time and distance from a multistage shuttle protocol. The calculator does not convert a beep-test stage by itself because protocols differ in stage speed, lap count, recovery, and termination rules.
Total and Above-Rest Calories
Total calories include the standardized one-MET resting component. Above-rest calories subtract it for a second comparison. Actual watch or machine values can differ depending on which definition they display.
Assumptions and Limitations
- The fixed 11-MET value is a standardized population estimate rather than an individual measurement.
- Active and recovery time must be separated accurately.
- Turn technique, acceleration, direction, surface, footwear, fatigue, and running economy affect actual expenditure.
- The model does not add a separate anaerobic or post-exercise calorie amount.
- Typical seconds per rep are assumed constant in target mode.
Safety Note
Warm up before repeated sprints and direction changes. Use a clear route, visible turn lines, reliable traction, and enough room to decelerate under control. Increase change-of-direction volume gradually. Stop vigorous exercise for chest pressure or pain, dizziness, confusion, an unusually fast or irregular heartbeat, or unusual or extreme shortness of breath.
