Double Unders Calorie Formula
This calculator uses the direct double-under entry in the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium assigns 10.0 MET to rope jumping with double unders or more. A MET is a standardized expression of activity energy cost relative to rest.
The calculator reports total exercise calories first. It also gives an above-rest comparison by subtracting one MET before applying the same equation.
Calculating Calories From Double-Under Repetitions
Repetitions alone do not determine calories because the MET equation is time based. When completed repetitions are entered, the calculator converts them to active time using the successful cadence you provide:
Successful cadence means completed double unders divided by the time spent actively attempting the set. Brief misses may be included if the active timer continues, but standing recovery should be excluded. The default of 60 repetitions per minute is an editable example, not an official population average.
Solving for a Target Repetition Count
Target mode first divides the requested total calories by the total calorie rate. It then multiplies the resulting active minutes by cadence. Because a fraction of a repetition cannot be completed, the displayed answer rounds up to the next whole double under and recalculates calories at that rounded count.
Example
A 150 lb person weighs approximately 68.04 kg. At 10 MET, the standardized total rate is about 11.91 kcal per active minute. Completing 100 successful double unders at 60 per minute takes about 1 minute 40 seconds and produces an estimate of 19.8 total kcal.
Metabolic Calories vs. Workout Substitutions
Some functional-fitness workouts substitute a machine calorie target with a number of double unders. That is a programming conversion between workout tasks, not a measurement of food-energy expenditure. This calculator estimates metabolic calories from body weight and active time; it does not convert rower, bike, or ski-erg display calories.
Total and Above-Rest Calories
Total calories include the standardized one-MET resting component for the same period. Above-rest calories remove that component. Watches and exercise machines may label these values differently, so compare like with like.
Assumptions and Limitations
- The fixed 10-MET value is a population reference for adults, not an individual metabolic measurement.
- Cadence converts repetitions to active time; it does not change the fixed MET value.
- Technique, jump height, rope length, failed attempts, fatigue, fitness, and movement economy can change actual expenditure.
- Standing rest, warm-up, cool-down, and post-exercise energy use are excluded unless included in active time.
- One MET uses a standardized resting value rather than the user’s measured resting metabolism.
Safety Note
Build double-under volume gradually and use adequate overhead clearance, a suitable rope, and a non-slip surface. Repeated jumping can load the calves, Achilles tendons, feet, and ankles. Stop vigorous exercise for chest pressure or pain, dizziness, confusion, an unusually fast or irregular heartbeat, or unusual or extreme shortness of breath.
