Enter the sound intensity (W/m^2), the Area (m^2), and the Time (seconds) into the calculator to determine the Sound Energy.

Sound Energy Formula

The following equation is used to calculate the Sound Energy.

E = I * A * T
  • Where E is the Sound Energy (Joules)
  • I is the sound intensity (W/m^2)
  • A is the Area (m^2)
  • T is the Time (seconds)

To calculate sound energy, multiply the sound intensity by the area, then multiply again by the time.

How to Calculate Sound Energy?

The following example problems outline the steps and information needed to calculate the Sound Energy.

Example Problem #1

  1. First, determine the sound intensity (W/m^2). In this example, the sound intensity (W/m^2) is determined to be 51 .
  2. Next, determine the Area (m^2). For this problem, the Area (m^2) is measured to be 9 .
  3. Next, determine the Time (seconds). In this case, the Time (seconds) is found to be 4.
  4. Finally, calculate the Sound Energy using the formula above:

E = I * A * T

Inserting the values from above and solving the equation yields:

E = 51 * 9 * 4 = 1836 (Joules)

Example Problem #2

Using the same method as above, first, we need to measure or determine the variables required by the equation. For this example problem, these are provided as follows:

sound intensity (W/m^2) = 509

Area (m^2) = 49

Time (seconds) = 3

Enter these given values into the calculator or above yields:

E = 509 * 49 * 3 = 74823 (Joules)
