Trap Shooting Average Calculator

Trap Shooting Average Formula

Average (%) = 100 × total targets broken / total targets counted

Use Target Totals for a Combined Average

A score such as 23/25 means 23 targets were recorded as broken out of 25 targets counted. For several rounds, add all the broken targets and all the counted targets before dividing. This gives every target equal weight. It also works when rounds or events contain different numbers of targets.

Two Ways to Enter Scores

Choose Total targets and breaks if you already have combined totals. Both entries must be whole counts, with at least one counted target and no more breaks than targets. Choose Individual rounds to enter scores such as 23/25,45/50,24/25. Separate entries with commas, spaces, or semicolons. Each round must include both counts; a bare 23 is ambiguous and is rejected.

Worked Example

The rounds 23/25, 45/50, and 24/25 total 92 broken targets out of 100. The combined average is 92 ÷ 100 × 100 = 92.00%. Eight targets were missed. The equivalent average per 25 is 92 ÷ 100 × 25 = 23.00. It summarizes the same overall rate and does not mean every round scored exactly 23.

Why Averaging Round Percentages Can Be Wrong

Suppose one round is 20/25 and a longer event is 95/100. Their percentages are 80% and 95%. Taking the simple mean gives 87.5%, but it gives the short round the same weight as the longer one. The target-weighted average is 115/125, or 92%. A simple mean of round percentages is valid only when the counted-target totals are equal.

Interpreting Breaks, Misses, and the Per-25 Figure

Misses equal counted targets minus broken targets. A 0% result is valid when targets were counted but none were broken. A 100% result means all counted targets were recorded as broken. The per-25 figure is a normalized summary for comparison, not a prediction of the next round. In doubles records, enter target counts rather than pair counts.

Recordkeeping and Limitations

Keep singles, handicap, and doubles records separate when calculating discipline-specific averages. Enter the official scored targets in the relevant denominator and avoid double-counting rounds already included in an event total. This tool reports an ordinary target-weighted average, not an ATA classification, handicap-yardage decision, or purified average. Those decisions can depend on additional records and official rules.

Large Lists and Saved Scores

The round method accepts up to 500 entries, with up to 10,000 targets per entry. All valid entries contribute to the result; the on-screen round breakdown displays the first 20 to keep it readable. The totals method supports up to 10 million targets. Calculate saves the entered scores in the current browser; the result is recomputed on reload. Reset clears the saved calculation.
