Example total = maintenance estimate × (1 + surplus fraction)
Worked example
At a hypothetical 2,500-kcal/day maintenance level, 10% is 250 kcal/day and the total is 2,750 kcal/day. A fixed 250-kcal addition is 12.5% of 2,000 but about 8.3% of 3,000.
Maintenance is an estimate and can change. A surplus is not a muscle-gain forecast or a personal target; training, protein, recovery and individual context also matter.

A bulking calculation usually starts with estimated maintenance calories and adds an energy surplus. The math is straightforward; predicting how much muscle someone gains is not. We will use a hypothetical example to separate the arithmetic from the biological outcome.
Maintenance means an estimated intake that matches daily energy expenditure under the current conditions. Resting metabolism, activity, and other energy costs contribute to that total. A formula produces a starting estimate, and changing activity or body size can change the baseline.
For arithmetic only, suppose maintenance is twenty-five hundred calories per day and the chosen surplus is ten percent. Divide ten by one hundred to get zero point one. Multiply twenty-five hundred by zero point one. The additional amount is two hundred fifty calories per day.
Add the surplus to the baseline: twenty-five hundred plus two hundred fifty equals twenty-seven hundred fifty calories per day. The shortcut is to multiply maintenance by one point one. The one represents the full baseline; the extra tenth represents the surplus.
A fixed two-hundred-fifty-calorie addition equals ten percent only when maintenance is twenty-five hundred. At a two-thousand-calorie baseline, that same addition is twelve point five percent. At three thousand, it is about eight point three percent. State whether you are using a fixed amount or a percentage.
Reverse-check the example by subtracting maintenance from the total. Twenty-seven hundred fifty minus twenty-five hundred returns two hundred fifty. Divide that difference by twenty-five hundred and multiply by one hundred to recover ten percent. This checks the calculation, not whether that target suits a person.
A larger surplus does not guarantee proportionally more muscle. Training, nutrition, recovery, and individual response matter, and additional weight can include fat and water. Research in trained lifters has found that faster weight gain can mainly increase fat gain. The appropriate plan needs individual context.
To calculate a percentage surplus, convert the percentage to a decimal, multiply by maintenance, and add the result. Keep units as calories per day and label the assumptions. Our twenty-seven-hundred-fifty result is a math example, not a personal prescription or a promise of muscle gain.
