Walking Cadence Formula

The basic relationship is speed equals cadence times step length. The calculator converts speed to meters per minute and step length to meters before solving.

V = C * L
C = V / L
L = V / C
  • V = walking speed, in meters per minute
  • C = cadence, in steps per minute
  • L = step length, in meters per step

If you enter speed in m/s, km/h, or mph, it is converted to m/min first. If you enter step length in feet, it is converted to meters first. Cadence is treated as steps per minute.

Typical Walking Cadence and Step Length Values

Use these ranges as rough reference points. Actual values vary by height, fitness, terrain, and walking purpose.

Walking pace Typical cadence General meaning
Easy stroll 70 to 90 steps/min Slow, relaxed walking
Normal walk 90 to 110 steps/min Common everyday walking speed
Brisk walk 110 to 130 steps/min Faster walking for exercise
Very fast walk 130+ steps/min Near race-walking for many people
Measure Typical adult range Notes
Step length 0.60 to 0.85 m Distance covered by one step
Walking speed 3 to 5 km/h Common range for normal walking
Brisk walking speed 5 to 6.5 km/h Often used for fitness walking

Example and Notes

If you walk at 5 km/h with a step length of 0.75 m, first convert speed:

5 km/h = 83.33 m/min

Then divide by step length:

83.33 / 0.75 = 111.11 steps/min

Your estimated cadence is about 111 steps per minute. For best results, use your actual step length from a measured walk instead of a general estimate.
