Compare a road-running time with the 2025 age-grading tables, or solve backward for the performance associated with a target percentage.
How the Age Graded Running Calculator Works
Age grading uses an event-specific open standard and a sex-and-age factor to place performances on a common percentage scale. This implementation identifies its data as the 2025 road tables.
Grade mode multiplies actual time by the selected factor before comparing it with the open standard. Target mode rearranges the same relationship to solve an actual time.
Formula and Method
Formula: age grade = open standard / (actual time x age factor) x 100
Age-standard time is open standard divided by the factor. Target actual time is open standard divided by factor and target percentage as a decimal.
Choosing the Right Inputs
Choose the sex reference, whole-year age from 5 to 100, and one of five supported road events. Custom-distance interpolation is intentionally excluded.
| Percentage | Common interpretation | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 100% | Approximately world-record level | A health measure |
| 90%+ | World class | Guaranteed placing |
| 80%+ | National class | Training readiness |
| 70%+ | Regional class | Identical standards everywhere |
| 60%+ | Local class | A medical assessment |
Understanding Your Results
Percentage and band lead in grade mode. Both modes show graded or target time, age standard, open standard, exact factor, and the 2025 version stamp.
Percentages compare performances against a particular reference table. Changing the table version can change the result.
Worked Example
A 60-year-old male reference at 20:00 for 5K uses factor 0.8075 and open standard 12:49, producing 79.36%. A 60-year-old female reference needs about 22:48 for an 80% 5K grade.
Common Mistakes
Do not mix factors from one table version with standards from another, interpolate unsupported distances, or round the factor before calculation.
Assumptions and Limitations
Age grading is a performance comparison method. It does not account for course, weather, health, training, or whether a target is appropriate for an individual.
