Calculate average point score, total points earned, or number of entries from any two values entered to find the third value in one step.
Average Point Score Formula
The average point score is the total number of points earned divided by the number of entries. The calculator can also rearrange the same relationship to find total points or number of entries.
APS = TP / N
TP = APS * N
N = TP / APS
- APS = average point score, in points
- TP = total number of points earned
- N = number of entries
The calculator works when you enter any two values and leave the third blank:
- To calculate average point score: enter total points and number of entries. The calculator divides total points by entries.
- To calculate total points earned: enter average point score and number of entries. The calculator multiplies them together.
- To calculate number of entries: enter total points and average point score. The calculator divides total points by the average score.
Average Point Score Inputs and Result Meaning
Use the table below to check which values you need to enter for each calculation.
| What you want to find | Enter these values | Leave blank | Formula used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average point score | Total points and number of entries | Average point score | APS = TP / N |
| Total points earned | Number of entries and average point score | Total points earned | TP = APS * N |
| Number of entries | Total points and average point score | Number of entries | N = TP / APS |
The second table shows simple interpretations of an average point score. The meaning depends on the scoring system being used.
| Average point score result | How to read it |
|---|---|
| 0 | No points were earned across the entries. |
| Positive number | Each entry earned this many points on average. |
| Decimal result | The average does not have to be a whole number, even if each individual score is whole. |
Example Average Point Score Calculations
Example 1: Find the average point score
You have 240 total points earned across 12 entries.
APS = 240 / 12 = 20
The average point score is 20 points.
Example 2: Find the total points earned
You know the average point score is 18.5 points and there are 8 entries.
TP = 18.5 * 8 = 148
The total number of points earned is 148 points.
Average Point Score FAQ
What is an average point score?
An average point score is the typical number of points earned per entry. It is found by dividing the total points earned by the number of entries. For example, if 5 entries earn 100 total points, the average point score is 20 points.
Can the average point score be a decimal?
Yes. The average can be a decimal because total points may not divide evenly by the number of entries. For example, 50 points across 6 entries gives an average point score of 8.3333 points.
Why does the number of entries need to be greater than zero?
You cannot divide by zero. If there are no entries, there is no valid average point score because there is nothing to average across.
