Use this Bank Account Fee Calculator to total maintenance, transaction, ATM, overdraft, and other fees and check whether a balance waiver is worthwhile.
Bank Account Fee Formula
The calculator first determines whether the average balance meets the entered maintenance-fee waiver threshold. It then adds recurring usage fees and annual charges.
Maintenance = 0, if Average Balance >= Waiver Threshold Monthly Cost = Maintenance + N_t * F_t + N_a * F_a + N_o * F_o + Other Monthly Fees Annual Cost = 12 * Monthly Cost + Other Annual Fees
Variables:
- Nt and Ft are the number and fee for chargeable transactions
- Na and Fa are out-of-network ATM uses and the bank’s fee per use
- No and Fo are overdraft or returned-item events and the fee per event
- Maintenance is the monthly account fee after any balance waiver
When the average balance is below the waiver threshold, the balance gap is the difference between the two. The calculator also treats the annual maintenance fee avoided as a return on the extra balance that would need to remain in the account:
Balance Gap = max(0, Threshold - Average Balance) Implied Fee-Savings Return = Annual Maintenance Fee / Balance Gap
This comparison can reveal whether keeping more cash in a low-yield account is worthwhile. The opportunity cost of that cash should also be considered, especially when an alternative account pays a higher rate.
Annual Fee Scenarios
The examples assume a $12 monthly maintenance fee, a $1,500 waiver threshold, two chargeable transactions at $1.50 each, and one $3 out-of-network ATM use per month.
| Average balance | Maintenance waived? | Monthly fees | Annual fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | No | $18.00 | $216.00 |
| $900 | No | $18.00 | $216.00 |
| $1,500 | Yes | $6.00 | $72.00 |
| $2,500 | Yes | $6.00 | $72.00 |
Example Problems
Example 1: Estimate annual account cost.
An account charges $12 per month, two $1.50 transaction fees, and one $3 ATM fee. The average balance is $900, below the $1,500 waiver threshold. Monthly cost is 12 + 3 + 3 = $18, and annual cost is $216.
Example 2: Decide whether to meet the waiver balance.
The account holder needs another $600 of average balance to reach $1,500. Avoiding the $12 monthly fee saves $144 per year. That fee saving equals 144 / 600 = 24% of the additional balance, before considering interest that money could earn elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the waiver depends on direct deposit instead of balance?
Set the balance threshold to zero and enter the maintenance fee as zero when you expect the direct-deposit condition to be met. The calculator cannot verify eligibility, so use the disclosure’s exact rules.
Do ATM operator surcharges belong in this calculator?
The ATM count and fee field is intended for the fee charged by your own bank. A separate operator surcharge can be added to other monthly fees or evaluated in the dedicated ATM Fee Calculator.
Should overdraft fees be entered every month?
Enter an expected average frequency. If an event happens only twice per year, you can enter 2 / 12, or about 0.167 per month, to spread the expected cost across the year.
