Match a youth player’s age and play format with a recommended rim height, or check an existing hoop against the guideline.
How the Basketball Hoop Height By Age Calculator Works
The 5-on-5 chart steps from an 8-foot rim for ages 7-8 to 9 feet for ages 9-11, then to 10 feet from age 12. USA Basketball’s 3×3 guidance uses 8 feet for ages 6-9, permits 9 or 10 feet for ages 10-14, and uses 10 feet for older players.
Formula: 5-on-5: ages 7-8 = 8 ft, ages 9-11 = 9 ft, ages 12+ = 10 ft; 3×3: ages 6-9 = 8 ft, ages 10-14 = 9-10 ft, older = 10 ft
Choosing the Right Inputs
Choose the play format before selecting the player’s age. Check mode adds the current rim height and compares it with the exact recommendation or nearest edge of the official range.
| Format | Age band | Rim height | Metric |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-on-5 | 7-8 | 8 ft | 2.44 m |
| 5-on-5 | 9-11 | 9 ft | 2.74 m |
| 5-on-5 | 12 and older | 10 ft | 3.05 m |
| 3×3 | 6-9 | 8 ft | 2.44 m |
| 3×3 | 10-14 | 9-10 ft | 2.74-3.05 m |
| 3×3 | Grades 9-12 and older | 10 ft | 3.05 m |
Understanding Your Results
The recommendation or equipment-check status leads, followed by the applicable segment, equivalent inches and meters, current height, and difference from the guideline when relevant.
Worked Example
A 10-year-old in 5-on-5 uses a 9-foot recommendation. The same age in 3×3 falls within a 9- to 10-foot range, so both listed heights match that format’s guidance.
Assumptions and Limitations
Facilities and local competitions may follow different rules, especially for introductory or adaptive programs. The national 5-on-5 chart begins at age 7; the age-6 option is available only through the cited 3×3 guidance.
