Calculate free throw percentage for any sample or plan the makes needed over a future batch of attempts.
How the Free Throw Percentage Calculator Works
Free throw percentage divides successful free throws by free-throw attempts. The planner combines current totals with a fixed number of future attempts, rounds the required future makes upward, and identifies targets that cannot be reached within that batch.
Formula: FT% = FTM / FTA x 100; required future makes = ceiling(target x total attempts – current makes)
Choosing the Right Inputs
Enter official made and attempted free throws from the same period. In planning mode, future attempts are a fixed scenario rather than a prediction; the calculator checks whether enough makes are available to reach the target.
| Current line | Future attempts | Target | Minimum future makes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 of 10 | 10 | 80% | 8 |
| 15 of 20 | 10 | 80% | 9 |
| 40 of 50 | 10 | 82% | 10 |
| 72 of 90 | 10 | 80% | 8 |
Understanding Your Results
The requested answer appears first, followed by the resulting percentage, makes, misses, and attempts. Percentage mode shows next-shot impact; planning mode shows the minimum future makes, best attainable rate, and the result with one fewer make.
Worked Example
A player at 40 of 50 who expects 10 more attempts needs 10 future makes to finish at 50 of 60, or 83.3%. Nine makes would produce 81.7%, below an 82% target.
Assumptions and Limitations
FT% is descriptive and does not predict the next attempt. Small samples move sharply, while large season samples change slowly. Fatigue, pressure, shot routine, and competition level are not modeled.
