How the Basketball Pace Calculator Works
Pace expresses possessions on a standard regulation-game scale. Known-possession mode rescales an actual count when overtime or a partial game changes the minutes. Box-score mode estimates each team’s possessions, averages them, and then applies the same time adjustment.
Formula: Pace = game possessions / actual game minutes x regulation minutes; estimated team possessions = FGA + 0.44 x FTA – OREB + TOV
Choosing the Right Inputs
Choose a 48-, 40-, or 32-minute preset or enter a custom regulation length, then enter actual elapsed game minutes including overtime. Use a trusted shared-game possession total when available. Otherwise enter both teams’ box-score totals from the same game.

Understanding Your Results
Normalized pace leads, followed by actual game possessions, timing, and regulation scale. Box-score mode also shows each team estimate and their difference so a large data mismatch is visible.
Worked Example
A 48-minute game with 100 possessions has a pace of 100.0. A 53-minute overtime game with 110 possessions normalizes to 110 / 53 x 48 = 99.6 possessions per 48 minutes.
Assumptions and Limitations
Box-score possessions are estimates and the 0.44 free-throw factor can miss special sequences. Pace measures tempo, not quality; two teams can play at the same pace with very different efficiency.
