How the Points Per Possession Calculator Works
PPP divides scoring by possessions so games and teams with different tempos can be compared on one opportunity scale. When an official possession count is unavailable, the box-score mode estimates possessions from field-goal attempts, free-throw attempts, offensive rebounds, and turnovers.
Formula: PPP = points / possessions; estimated possessions = FGA + 0.44 x FTA – OREB + TOV
Choosing the Right Inputs
Direct mode is best when a reliable possession total is available. In box-score mode, enter one team’s points and team box-score totals from the same game or period. Do not combine a player’s points with team possessions unless that is the comparison you intend.

Understanding Your Results
PPP appears first, followed by offensive rating per 100 possessions, the possession total, points, and the scoring difference relative to exactly 1.000 point per possession.
Worked Example
A team scoring 110 points with 85 FGA, 20 FTA, 10 offensive rebounds, and 15 turnovers has an estimated 98.8 possessions. Its PPP is about 1.113 and its per-100 offensive rating is 111.3.
Assumptions and Limitations
The 0.44 coefficient approximates how free throws consume possessions and can differ from play-by-play accounting. PPP describes scoring efficiency but not opponent quality, lineup context, or defensive performance.
