Educational use only; not medical advice. This calculator compares dietary calcium and phosphorus amounts (e.g., mg per serving or mg/day) and is not for interpreting blood or urine lab results. Do not use it to diagnose, treat, or set supplement/medication doses. Discuss changes with a clinician or registered dietitian—especially if you have kidney disease, parathyroid/bone-mineral disorders, or take phosphate binders, calcium, or vitamin D. Calcium/Phosphorus Ratio Formula

The calcium to phosphorus ratio compares the amount of calcium to the amount of phosphorus using the same unit for both values. The calculator converts grams to milligrams when needed, then uses the ratio formula.

Ca:P = Calcium / Phosphorus
  • Ca:P = calcium to phosphorus ratio, shown as a number to 1
  • Calcium = calcium amount in milligrams or grams
  • Phosphorus = phosphorus amount in milligrams or grams

For the “Find Missing Value” mode, the calculator rearranges the same ratio formula:

Calcium = Target Ratio * Phosphorus
Phosphorus = Calcium / Target Ratio
  • Target Ratio = desired Ca:P ratio, such as 1.3 for a 1.3:1 ratio
  • Calcium = calcium needed for the target ratio
  • Phosphorus = phosphorus needed for the target ratio

The Ca:P Ratio tab calculates the ratio from known calcium and phosphorus amounts. The Find Missing Value tab calculates either the calcium needed from a known phosphorus value, or the phosphorus needed from a known calcium value.

Common Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio Targets

Use the context setting to compare your result with a typical target range. These ranges are general ratio targets, not a full nutrition plan.

Context Typical Ca:P target How to read it
Adult human diet 1.0:1 to 2.0:1 Calcium is about equal to, or up to twice, phosphorus.
Adult dog food 1.0:1 to 2.0:1 A balanced adult maintenance range for many diets.
Puppy / growth 1.1:1 to 1.6:1 A narrower range because growth diets are more sensitive to mineral balance.
Cat food 0.9:1 to 1.5:1 Calcium is usually close to phosphorus, with some room above it.

Unit Conversions Used

Input unit Converted value
1 g 1000 mg
0.5 g 500 mg
1000 mg 1 g

Example Calculations

Example 1: Calculate a Ca:P ratio

You enter 1000 mg of calcium and 700 mg of phosphorus.

Ca:P = 1000 / 700 = 1.43

The Ca:P ratio is 1.43:1.

Example 2: Find calcium needed

You know phosphorus is 800 mg and you want a 1.3:1 Ca:P ratio.

Calcium = 1.3 * 800 = 1040 mg

You need 1040 mg of calcium, which is 1.04 g.

FAQs

What does a 1.5:1 calcium to phosphorus ratio mean?

A 1.5:1 Ca:P ratio means there is 1.5 times as much calcium as phosphorus. For example, 1500 mg of calcium and 1000 mg of phosphorus gives a 1.5:1 ratio.

Do calcium and phosphorus have to be entered in the same unit?

No. You can enter one value in grams and the other in milligrams. The calculator converts both amounts to milligrams before calculating the ratio.

Is the Ca:P ratio enough to judge a diet?

No. The ratio only compares calcium with phosphorus. Total mineral amounts, calories, age, species, health conditions, and the rest of the diet also matter. A ratio can look acceptable even when the actual calcium or phosphorus amount is too high or too low.
