Calories Burned Trimming Bushes Formula
The calculator uses the standard MET (metabolic equivalent) energy expenditure equation.
Calories = MET × 3.5 × kg / 200 × minutes
- Calories = total kilocalories burned
- MET = metabolic equivalent of the trimming activity
- kg = body weight in kilograms (pounds are converted at 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg)
- minutes = trimming time in minutes (hours are multiplied by 60)
- 3.5 = baseline oxygen uptake in mL/kg/min
- 200 = constant that converts oxygen use to kcal/min
The formula assumes steady activity at the chosen MET level and average metabolic efficiency. It does not adjust for age, sex, body composition, or terrain. Short rest breaks within a session are fine, but long pauses should be subtracted from the trimming time.
The “Time to goal” mode rearranges the same formula to solve for minutes:
Minutes = Calories / (MET × 3.5 × kg / 200)
The two tabs share one equation. Calories burned mode multiplies your per-minute burn rate by your time. Time to goal mode divides your calorie target by that same per-minute rate. The trimming type dropdown sets the MET value, which is the only variable that changes how hard the work is rated.
Reference Tables
Use these tables to pick a realistic intensity and to sanity-check the result.
| Trimming type | MET | Intensity |
|---|---|---|
| Electric trimmer, light shrubs | 3.5 | Light |
| Manual hand shears, steady | 4.0 | Moderate |
| Trimming plus hauling clippings | 5.0 | Moderate |
| Vigorous trimming and cleanup | 6.0 | Vigorous |
| Body weight | 30 min light (3.5 MET) | 30 min moderate (5.0 MET) | 30 min vigorous (6.0 MET) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 130 lb (59 kg) | 108 cal | 155 cal | 186 cal |
| 160 lb (73 kg) | 133 cal | 190 cal | 228 cal |
| 190 lb (86 kg) | 158 cal | 226 cal | 271 cal |
| 220 lb (100 kg) | 184 cal | 263 cal | 315 cal |
Example and FAQ
Example: You weigh 175 lb and spend 45 minutes shaping shrubs with hand shears (4.0 MET). Convert weight: 175 × 0.4536 = 79.4 kg. Per-minute burn: 4.0 × 3.5 × 79.4 / 200 = 5.56 cal/min. Total: 5.56 × 45 = about 250 Calories.
Does an electric or gas trimmer burn fewer calories than hand shears? Usually yes. Powered tools cut faster but require less arm and shoulder effort, so the MET drops to around 3.5 unless you are also moving ladders or cleaning up.
Should I include cleanup time? Yes, if you are actively raking, bagging, or hauling clippings. Pick the 5.0 MET option to cover the mix. If you took a long break, leave that time out.
Why are these “Calories” capitalized? One food Calorie equals one kilocalorie (kcal). The formula already produces kcal, so the number you see matches what is on a nutrition label.
How accurate is the result? MET-based estimates are typically within 10 to 15 percent for healthy adults at the listed intensity. Heart rate monitors and fitness watches can refine the number, but the formula is a solid baseline.
Does trimming count as exercise? Anything at 3.0 MET or higher counts as moderate physical activity under public health guidelines. Thirty minutes of steady trimming contributes to your weekly activity total.
