Ccf vs Mcf Formula

The calculator uses two simple relationships. The conversion mode handles volume. The gas energy mode multiplies volume by the heat content of the gas.

1 Mcf = 10 Ccf = 1,000 cubic feet
Energy (Btu) = Volume (Ccf) * Heat content (Btu/Ccf)
  • Ccf: hundred cubic feet (c = 100 in Roman numerals)
  • Mcf: thousand cubic feet (M = 1,000 in Roman numerals)
  • Heat content: energy per Ccf, typically near 102,000 Btu
  • Therm: 100,000 Btu
  • MMBtu: 1,000,000 Btu

The Ccf to Mcf tab converts any volume you enter (Ccf, Mcf, or cubic feet) into the unit you choose. The math is just division or multiplication by 10 or 100.

The Gas energy tab takes the same volume, converts it to Ccf internally, then multiplies by the Btu-per-Ccf value you select. It returns therms, MMBtu, and a kWh equivalent (1 kWh = 3,412.14 Btu).

Examples and FAQ

Example 1. Your bill shows 47 Ccf used. To convert to Mcf, divide by 10: 47 / 10 = 4.7 Mcf. At 102,000 Btu per Ccf, energy is 47 * 102,000 = 4,794,000 Btu, or about 47.94 therms.

Example 2. A meter reads 3,200 cubic feet. Divide by 100 to get 32 Ccf, or by 1,000 to get 3.2 Mcf. At 1 therm per Ccf, that is roughly 32 therms.

Is Mcf bigger than Ccf? Yes. 1 Mcf equals 10 Ccf. The “M” comes from the Roman numeral for 1,000, not “mega.”

Why does my bill list Ccf but charge per therm? Utilities bill on energy delivered. They measure volume in Ccf, then multiply by a billing factor (close to 1.02) to get therms.

Can I use this for propane or other fuels? No. The heat content presets are for natural gas. Propane has roughly 2,500 Btu per cubic foot, so the volume-to-energy math is different.

How do I convert Mcf to kWh? 1 Mcf at 102,000 Btu per Ccf equals 1,020,000 Btu, which is about 299 kWh of equivalent thermal energy.
