CPE Formula
The main formula for cost per engagement is:
The calculator also rearranges the same relationship to estimate engagements or budget:
- CPE = cost per engagement, usually shown as dollars per engagement
- Total Ad Spend = the amount spent on the campaign
- Total Engagements = the number of interactions generated by the campaign
- Campaign Budget = the amount you plan to spend
- Expected CPE = the cost per engagement you expect based on past results or a benchmark
- Engagement Goal = the number of engagements you want to generate
- Target CPE = the cost per engagement you want to achieve
Use Find CPE when you already know spend and total engagements. Use Find Engagements when you know your budget and want to estimate how many engagements it may buy. Use Find Budget when you have an engagement goal and need to estimate the required spend.
Typical CPE Benchmarks by Platform
Benchmarks vary by audience, creative quality, bidding method, placement, and campaign objective. The values below are simple reference points for paid social planning.
| Platform or placement | Typical CPE | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook feed | About $0.10 | Often efficient for broad consumer audiences |
| Instagram feed | About $0.25 | Common for visual consumer campaigns |
| TikTok | About $0.40 | Depends heavily on creative and audience fit |
| About $0.80 | Usually higher because of B2B targeting costs | |
| X / Twitter | About $0.15 | Can be efficient for timely or discussion-based content |
Interpreting Your CPE Result
| CPE result | General interpretation |
|---|---|
| Below $0.10 | Very efficient for most paid social campaigns |
| $0.10 to $0.30 | Common range for efficient Facebook or Instagram campaigns |
| $0.30 to $0.60 | Typical for mid-range paid social engagement campaigns |
| $0.60 to $1.00 | Higher, but still common for niche audiences or B2B platforms |
| Above $1.00 | High for many campaigns, so targeting, creative, or objective may need review |
Example CPE Calculations
Example 1: Find cost per engagement
You spent $500 and received 1,200 engagements.
Your CPE is about $0.4167 per engagement, or about $0.42 if rounded to the nearest cent.
Example 2: Find the budget needed
You want 5,000 engagements and your target CPE is $0.50.
You would need a budget of $2,500 to reach that engagement goal at the target CPE.
FAQ
What counts as an engagement?
An engagement is any interaction counted by the ad platform. This can include likes, reactions, comments, shares, saves, clicks, video interactions, or other actions. The exact definition depends on the platform and campaign objective, so use the same engagement definition when comparing campaigns.
Is a lower CPE always better?
A lower CPE means you are getting more engagements for each dollar spent, but it is not always better by itself. Low-cost engagements may not lead to sales, leads, signups, or other business outcomes. Compare CPE with conversion rate, cost per lead, return on ad spend, and engagement quality.
Why is my CPE higher than the benchmark?
CPE can be higher because of narrow targeting, expensive audiences, weak creative, low relevance, high competition, or a platform with higher media costs. B2B and niche campaigns often have higher CPE than broad consumer campaigns. Testing different creative, placements, audiences, and objectives can help identify what is driving the cost.
