Cutting Time Formula

The following formula is used to calculate cutting time:

CT = L / CS
  • Where CT is the cutting time (min)
  • L is the length of the work piece
  • CS is the cutting speed (distance/min)

To calculate the cutting time for a single pass, divide the total length of the work piece by the cutting (linear travel) speed. For multiple passes over the same length, multiply the single-pass time by the number of passes.

What is cutting time?

Definition:

Cutting time is a measure of the time the tool spends cutting along the required path at a given cutting (linear travel) speed (excluding setup, tool changes, and other non-cutting time).

How to calculate cutting time?

Example Problem:

The following example problem outlines how to calculate the cutting time of a machine.

First, determine the overall length of the workpiece. In this case, the piece of material is measured to have a length of 6 inches.

Next, determine the cutting speed. This would be the linear distance travelled along the cut per unit time.

In this case, the cutting speed is 2 inches per minute.

Finally, calculate the cutting time using the formula above:

CT = L / CS

CT = 6 / 2

CT = 3 minutes
