Daily Attendance Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the daily attendance percentage.

A = (N / T) × 100

Variables:

  • A is the daily attendance percentage
  • N is the number of attendees
  • T is the total number of possible attendees

To calculate daily attendance, divide present by enrolled and multiply by 100. Period attendance divides total student attendance days by possible student-days. Average daily attendance divides total student attendance days by school days. Use actual membership totals if enrollment changes. For an individual target p, solve (A + x)/(T + x) ≥ p for the smallest whole number x of future classes attended.

Average Daily Membership

Average daily membership (ADM) counts enrolled students, including those absent. For a school period, ADM = total student membership days ÷ school days. The optional membership mode uses the sum of daily enrollment counts, so it can account for enrollment changes. For example, 2,000 membership days over 20 school days gives an ADM of 100 students.

If you also enter 1,800 attendance days for that same period, average daily attendance (ADA) is 90 students and the attendance rate is ADA ÷ ADM × 100 = 90%. Equivalently, divide attendance days by membership days and multiply by 100. A zero membership total has no defined attendance percentage. Use the same period and counting basis for both totals; local rules for partial days and funding eligibility may differ. See the NCES definitions of ADA and ADM.
