Calculate accrued annual leave, remaining days, or part-time pro-rata entitlement from annual allowance, work period, schedule, carryover, and leave taken.

Apply a simple proportional period to your annual leave allowance. Choose the period convention your policy uses.

For part-time mode, enter the full-time annual allowance.

Unit changes preserve the proportional year fraction. These are explicit policy conventions, not exact calendar date intervals.

Annual Leave Days Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the remaining leave days for a given total number of leave days and leave days taken.

R = T - L

Variables:

  • R is the remaining leave days
  • T is the total leave days
  • L is the leave days taken

To calculate the remaining leave days, subtract leave taken from the current accrued entitlement plus any separate carryover. Do not count carryover twice.

Simple proportional accrual = annual allowance ร— period fraction. Use months / 12, weeks / 52, years directly, or days divided by the chosen 365-day, 366-day or 260-day convention. Pro-rata annual allowance = full-time allowance ร— employee working days per week / full-time working days per week, assuming compatible day lengths. These are arithmetic estimates; contracts, local law, irregular schedules and employer rounding rules can differ.

How to Calculate Annual Leave Days?

The following steps outline how to calculate the remaining annual leave days.

  1. First, determine the total leave days (T) granted to the employee.
  2. Next, determine the leave days taken (L) by the employee.
  3. Finally, calculate the remaining leave days (R) using the formula R = T - L.
  4. After inserting the values and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Total leave days (T) = 20

Leave days taken (L) = 5

Remaining leave days (R) = 15
