Drop Out Ratio Formula
The drop out ratio shows the percentage of enrolled students who dropped out. The calculator can solve for the drop out ratio, the number of students who dropped out, or the total number of students enrolled when you enter any two values.
- DOR = drop out ratio, expressed as a percentage
- D = number of students who dropped out
- E = total number of students enrolled
If you leave the drop out ratio blank, the calculator divides the number of students who dropped out by the total enrollment, then multiplies by 100.
If you leave the number of students who dropped out blank, the calculator converts the drop out ratio from a percent to a decimal and multiplies it by total enrollment.
If you leave the total enrollment blank, the calculator divides the number of students who dropped out by the drop out ratio written as a decimal.

FAQ
What does drop out ratio mean?
Drop out ratio means the percentage of enrolled students who left before completing the course, grade level, school year, or program being measured. For example, a 5% drop out ratio means 5 students dropped out for every 100 students enrolled.
Is drop out ratio the same as retention rate?
No. Drop out ratio measures the share of students who left. Retention rate measures the share of students who stayed. If the only two outcomes are staying or dropping out, then retention rate can be estimated as 100% minus the drop out ratio.
Can the number of students who dropped out be a decimal?
In real student counts, the number of students should be a whole number. However, calculations can produce decimals when using percentages. The calculator rounds the calculated number of students and total enrollment to whole numbers.
