The following formula gives elapsed calendar days, excluding the end date. The same start and end date gives 0 days. Calendar years/months use clamped month-end anniversaries; this tool does not determine paid service or benefit eligibility.

How to Calculate Employment Duration?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Employment Duration.

First, determine the start date of employment (S).
Next, determine the end date of employment (E).
Next, calculate the duration in days using the formula D = (E – S).
Finally, calculate the Employment Duration.

Example Problem :

For the example below, January 1, 2020 to January 1, 2021 is 1 calendar year and 366 elapsed days, because 2020 includes February 29. For end-date mode, years and months are added together first, clamping to the target month’s last day when necessary, then calendar days are added.
