Food Delivery Tip Formula
The tip can be based on the food subtotal alone or on the food plus tax and delivery charges. A minimum tip can override the percentage result.
Selected tip base:
Tip Base = Food Subtotal or Tip Base = Food Subtotal + Fees and Tax
Percentage and applied tip:
Percentage Tip = Tip Base * Tip Rate Applied Tip = MAX(Percentage Tip, Minimum Tip)
Order total:
Total After Tip = Food Subtotal + Fees and Tax + Applied Tip
Variables:
- Food Subtotal is the menu-item total before fees and tax
- Fees and Tax includes any non-food charges entered together
- Tip Rate is written as a decimal in the formula
- Minimum Tip is the smallest amount you want the calculator to apply
- Applied Tip is the larger of the percentage result and the minimum
The effective rate shown in the result compares the applied tip with the food subtotal. This makes it clear when a minimum tip or a larger all-charges base raises the result above the entered percentage of food.

Example Problems
Example 1: Apply a minimum tip.
A delivery has a $22 food subtotal, $5 in fees, a 15% food-only rate, and a $5 minimum.
The percentage result is $22 × 0.15 = $3.30, so the $5 minimum applies. The final order total is $22 + $5 + $5 = $32.
Example 2: Include charges in the tip base.
A $40 food order has $8 in tax and fees. At 20% on all charges, the tip base is $48.
Tip = $48 × 0.20 = $9.60. That tip is 24% of the $40 food subtotal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are delivery fees paid to the driver?
A delivery fee is not automatically the same as a driver tip. Policies vary by platform and restaurant, so treat the fee and the voluntary tip as separate unless the order clearly says otherwise.
Should tax and fees be included in the tip base?
That is a personal choice. Select food subtotal only to exclude them, or food plus fees and tax to calculate on the complete pre-tip charge.
Why use a minimum tip?
A percentage of a small order can produce a very small dollar amount even when the delivery requires similar travel and handling. The minimum option lets the applied tip stay above a dollar floor you choose.
