Use the Bartender Tip Calculator to find gratuity by tab percentage or amount per drink, calculate the effective rate, and split the final bar total.
Bartender Tip Formula
The calculator supports the two common mathematical methods: a percentage of the bar tab or a fixed dollar amount for each drink.
Percentage method:
Tip = Bar Tab * Tip Rate
Per-drink method:
Tip = Number of Drinks * Tip Per Drink
Effective rate and final total:
Effective Tip Rate = Tip / Bar Tab Total After Tip = Bar Tab + Tip
Variables:
- Bar Tab is the amount before the voluntary tip
- Tip Rate is written as a decimal in the formula
- Number of Drinks is the count used for a per-drink tip
- Tip Per Drink is the selected dollar amount for each drink
- Effective Tip Rate expresses a per-drink result as a percentage of the tab
When a group splits the tab, the calculator divides the final total after tip by the number of people. It can also work backward from a known tip to find the implied percentage of the tab.
Bartender Tip Reference Table
The percentage rows use a $60 tab. The per-drink rows use six drinks and show the effective percentage against the same $60 tab.
| Method | Tip calculation | Tip | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15% of tab | $60 × 15% | $9.00 | $69.00 |
| 18% of tab | $60 × 18% | $10.80 | $70.80 |
| 20% of tab | $60 × 20% | $12.00 | $72.00 |
| $1 per drink | 6 × $1 | $6.00 | $66.00 |
| $2 per drink | 6 × $2 | $12.00 | $72.00 |
Example Problems
Example 1: Tip by percentage.
A bar tab is $84 and the selected rate is 20%.
Tip = $84 × 0.20 = $16.80. The final total is $100.80. If three people split it equally, each pays $33.60.
Example 2: Tip per drink.
A tab contains seven drinks and you choose $2 per drink.
Tip = 7 × $2 = $14. If the tab is $70, the effective tip rate is $14 / $70 × 100 = 20%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a per-drink tip the same as a percentage?
Not necessarily. A per-drink method depends on drink count, while a percentage depends on price. The calculator reports the effective percentage so the two methods can be compared.
Should I include tax in the bar tab?
Enter the amount you intend to use as the tip base. If you prefer a pre-tax calculation, use the pre-tax tab; if you prefer the full charged amount, include tax.
What if gratuity is already included?
Check the tab for an automatic gratuity or service charge. Subtract or account for any included gratuity before entering an additional voluntary tip.
