Round Up Tip Formula
The calculator begins with a percentage-based tip and then adjusts the final total to a selected increment, or it works backward from an exact target total.
Starting tip:
Starting Tip = Bill * Tip Rate
When rounding the full total upward to increment I:
Rounded Total = CEIL((Bill + Charges + Starting Tip) / I) * I
The actual tip after rounding is:
Actual Tip = Rounded Total - Bill - Charges
Variables:
- Bill is the subtotal used as the tip base
- Charges include tax or other fixed amounts added before the tip
- I is the rounding increment, such as $0.50, $1, $5, or $10
- CEIL rounds upward to the next whole increment
- Actual Tip may have a different effective percentage than the starting tip
