GPA To Average Formula

The calculator uses three formulas, one for each tab.

Convert tab (GPA to average %):

Average % = (GPA / Scale) * 100

Convert tab (average % to GPA):

GPA = (Average % / 100) * Scale

Courses tab (weighted GPA from letter grades):

GPA = sum(GradePoint_i * Credits_i) / sum(Credits_i)

Target tab (required future GPA):

Needed GPA = (Target * (Current Credits + Future Credits) - Current GPA * Current Credits) / Future Credits
  • GPA = grade point average on the chosen scale
  • Scale = maximum point value (4.0, 4.3, 5.0, or 10)
  • Average % = numeric average from 0 to 100
  • GradePoint_i = point value of the letter grade in course i
  • Credits_i = credit hours assigned to course i
  • Current GPA = your cumulative GPA so far
  • Current Credits = credits already completed
  • Target = cumulative GPA you want to reach
  • Future Credits = credits you still plan to take

The conversion uses a linear proportion. That works well for U.S.-style scales where percentages map directly to GPA bands, but individual schools sometimes use stricter cutoffs (for example 94% for an A instead of 93%). Treat the result as an estimate, not an official transcript value. On the Courses tab, selecting the 5.0 weighted scale adds 1.0 point to any non-failing grade to mimic an honors or AP weighting. The Target tab assumes all future credits earn the same average GPA.

Use the Convert tab when you already have a single GPA or single average and want the other number. Use the Courses tab when you have letter grades from a term and want both the GPA and the equivalent percentage. Use the Target tab when you know your current standing and want to know what you need to earn next term to hit a goal.

GPA, Percentage, and Letter Grade Reference

The first table shows how the calculator maps GPA to average percentage on the most common scales. The second table shows the standard letter grade bands used inside the calculator.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Convert a 3.5 GPA to an average percentage on the 4.0 scale.

Average % = (3.5 / 4.0) * 100 = 87.5%. That falls in the B+ band.

Example 2: Convert an 82% average to a 4.0 GPA.

GPA = (82 / 100) * 4.0 = 3.28. Round to 3.3 if your school reports two decimals.

Example 3: Course-weighted GPA.

Three courses: A (4.0) for 4 credits, B (3.0) for 3 credits, C (2.0) for 3 credits. Total points = 16 + 9 + 6 = 31. Total credits = 10. GPA = 31 / 10 = 3.10. Average % = 77.5%.

Example 4: Required future GPA.

Current GPA 3.20 over 45 credits. Target 3.50 after 15 more credits. Needed = (3.50 * 60 - 3.20 * 45) / 15 = (210 - 144) / 15 = 4.40. On a 4.0 scale that is not reachable, so the target needs more credits or a lower goal.

FAQ

Why does my school's conversion differ from this result? Many schools use fixed bands (for example, any percentage from 90 to 100 equals 4.0) rather than a straight proportion. The calculator uses a linear formula so that small changes in GPA show small changes in percentage. Use it as a quick estimate.

Does the 4.3 scale change the conversion? Yes. A 4.3 means an A+ is 4.3 and a plain A is 4.0. The percentage you get back from the formula assumes 4.3 equals 100%.

How do weighted classes affect the result? On the Courses tab, choosing the 5.0 scale adds 1.0 point to every passing letter grade. An F stays at 0. This mirrors how most U.S. high schools weight honors and AP courses.

Can the target GPA result be negative? Yes. A negative needed GPA means your current GPA is already higher than the target after the future credits are added. You have already met the goal.

What if the needed GPA is above the scale? The target is unreachable in the credits planned. Either add more future credits or lower the target.
