Enter your height into the calculator to estimate hip width. This calculator uses a simple anthropometric-style equation to provide an approximation of hip width based on body height.

Height to Hip Width Calculator

Enter either Height or Hip Width (leave the other blank) to calculate the missing value.

Note: This calculator provides a rough, non-clinical estimate based on a simplified height-to-hip-width equation (with constants defined in inches and other units converted). It is not medical advice and is not validated for clinical decision-making, medical device sizing, pregnancy, or children.

Height to Hip Width Formula

The following formula is used in this calculator to estimate hip width from height.

HW = H * 0.246 + 0.5

Variables (as used by the equation):

  • HW is the estimated hip width (inches)
  • H is the height of the person (inches)
  • If you enter other units in the calculator (ft/cm/m), they are converted internally to inches before applying the formula.

To estimate hip width, multiply height (in inches) by 0.246 and then add 0.5 inches. Because this is a simplified estimate, avoid treating the output as an exact measurement.

What is Hip Width?

“Hip width” can mean different measurements. In everyday use, people often mean hip breadth (standing): the horizontal distance across the widest points of the hips (often near the greater trochanters). This is not the same as hip circumference (a tape-measure distance around the hips).

How to measure (general guidance): Stand relaxed with feet about hip-width apart. Measure the widest left-to-right distance across the hip area, keeping your measuring tool level and parallel to the floor. Different protocols (standing vs. sitting, bony landmarks vs. soft-tissue “widest point”) will produce different values.

How to Calculate Hip Width from Height?

The following steps outline how this calculator estimates hip width from height:

  1. Enter the person's height (H) in any supported unit (in/ft/cm/m).
  2. The calculator converts height to inches internally (because the equation constants are in inches).
  3. Use the formula HW = H × 0.246 + 0.5 to estimate hip width (HW) in inches, then convert back to your selected unit.
  4. Compare the result to a direct measurement if you need higher accuracy.

Example Problem:

Consider this example to test your understanding of the formula.

Height (H) = 70 inches

Using the formula, the estimated hip width (HW) would be:

HW = 70 * 0.246 + 0.5 = 18.22 inches (approximately)
