Inches to Rack Units Formula
One rack unit (U) equals 1.75 inches (44.45 mm). The calculator uses two formulas depending on the direction of conversion.
- U = rack units
- H = height in inches; the inverse gives nominal rack spacing, not a guaranteed chassis dimension
If your height is in cm or mm, divide by 2.54 or 25.4 to get inches first. For a height-only estimate, round fractional U upward to whole nominal space. Use the equipment manufacturer’s stated U rating and required clearances; this conversion alone cannot establish physical fit.

Example
You have a server measured at 5.25 inches tall. Divide by 1.75:
5.25 / 1.75 = 3U of nominal spacing. Actual fit still depends on the equipment rating, mounting alignment and required clearances.
A device measured at 4.00 inches gives 4.00 / 1.75 = 2.286U. Round up to 3U for mounting; the extra 1.25 in (3 × 1.75 – 4.00) is unused vertical space. Most chassis are designed slightly shorter than the nominal U height to leave clearance between stacked units.
