Inches to Rack Units Formula
One rack unit (U) equals 1.75 inches (44.45 mm). The calculator uses two formulas depending on the direction of conversion.
U = H / 1.75
H = U * 1.75
- U = rack units
- H = equipment height in inches
If your height is in cm or mm, divide by 2.54 or 25.4 to get inches first. For physical rack planning, round any fractional U up to the next whole number; gear is mounted in whole-U slots even if the chassis itself is slightly shorter.
Common Heights and Rack Units
Standard EIA-310 rack-mount heights and their decimal equivalents:
| Rack Units | Inches | Millimeters |
|---|---|---|
| 1U | 1.75 in | 44.45 mm |
| 2U | 3.50 in | 88.90 mm |
| 3U | 5.25 in | 133.35 mm |
| 4U | 7.00 in | 177.80 mm |
| 6U | 10.50 in | 266.70 mm |
| 12U | 21.00 in | 533.40 mm |
| 24U | 42.00 in | 1066.80 mm |
| 42U | 73.50 in | 1866.90 mm |
| 48U | 84.00 in | 2133.60 mm |
Typical equipment by U size:
| Size | Common Equipment |
|---|---|
| 1U | Switches, patch panels, pizza-box servers, PDUs |
| 2U | Mid-range servers, UPS units, KVM drawers |
| 3U-4U | High-density storage, GPU servers, large UPS |
| 6U-12U | Blade chassis, tape libraries, wall-mount cabinets |
| 42U-48U | Full-size data center cabinets |
Example
You have a server measured at 5.25 inches tall. Divide by 1.75:
5.25 / 1.75 = 3U exactly. It will fit a 3U slot with no spare space.
A device measured at 4.00 inches gives 4.00 / 1.75 = 2.286U. Round up to 3U for mounting; the extra 1.25 in (3 × 1.75 - 4.00) is unused vertical space. Most chassis are designed slightly shorter than the nominal U height to leave clearance between stacked units.
