Enter the power requirement of each device and the number of each type of device into the calculator to determine the inverter capacity.

Inverter Capacity Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the inverter capacity.

IC = ∑(P * N)

Variables:

  • IC is the inverter capacity (W or kW)
  • P is the power requirement of each device (W or kW)
  • N is the number of each type of device

To calculate the inverter capacity, multiply the power requirement of each device by the number of that type of device. Sum up these products for all devices. The result is the total power requirement, which should be less than or equal to the inverter’s capacity.

What is an Inverter Capacity?

Inverter capacity refers to the maximum load that an inverter can handle. It is measured in watts or kilowatts and indicates the amount of electrical power the inverter can supply to various devices or appliances. The capacity of an inverter should be chosen based on the total power requirement of the devices it will be powering. If the total power requirement exceeds the inverter’s capacity, it may fail or damage the connected devices.

How to Calculate Inverter Capacity?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Inverter Capacity using the formula: IC = ∑(P * N).

  1. First, determine the power requirement of each device (P) in watts or kilowatts.
  2. Next, determine the number of each type of device (N).
  3. Multiply the power requirement of each device (P) by the number of each type of device (N) to get the total power requirement for all devices.
  4. Finally, sum up the total power requirement for all devices to calculate the Inverter Capacity (IC).

Example Problem:

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Power requirement of device 1 (P1) = 100 W

Number of device 1 (N1) = 3

Power requirement of device 2 (P2) = 200 W

Number of device 2 (N2) = 2
