Like to Dislike Ratio Formula
The calculator uses two formulas depending on the tab you choose.
Score mode reports the ratio and the positive rating:
Ratio = Likes / Dislikes Positive Rating (%) = Likes / (Likes + Dislikes) * 100
Goal planner mode solves for the extra likes needed to hit a target positive rating, assuming new ratings are likes:
Extra Likes = (Target * Total - Likes) / (1 - Target)
- Likes = current count of likes
- Dislikes = current count of dislikes
- Total = Likes + Dislikes
- Target = desired positive rating expressed as a decimal (90% = 0.90)
- Extra Likes = additional likes required, rounded up to a whole number
The Score tab takes your two counts and returns the raw ratio (likes per dislike), a simplified count ratio using the greatest common divisor, and the positive rating percentage. The Goal planner tab uses the second formula to tell you how many more likes you need to push the rating up to your target, and what your projected ratio looks like once those likes land.
Reference Tables
Use these tables to interpret what your number means and to set a realistic target.
| Positive Rating | Like:Dislike | Read |
|---|---|---|
| Below 60% | Under 1.5:1 | Bad |
| 60% to 69% | 1.5:1 to 2.2:1 | Needs work |
| 70% to 79% | 2.3:1 to 3.7:1 | Okay |
| 80% to 89% | 4:1 to 8:1 | Good |
| 90% and up | 9:1 or higher | Amazing |
| Starting point | Target | Extra likes needed |
|---|---|---|
| 50 likes / 50 dislikes | 75% | 100 |
| 100 likes / 25 dislikes | 90% | 125 |
| 200 likes / 50 dislikes | 95% | 750 |
| 500 likes / 100 dislikes | 90% | 400 |
Example Problems
Example 1. A video has 480 likes and 60 dislikes. The ratio is 480 ÷ 60 = 8:1. The positive rating is 480 ÷ 540 × 100 = 88.9%. That falls in the "Good" band.
Example 2. You have 120 likes and 30 dislikes (80% positive) and want to reach 90%. Extra likes = (0.90 × 150 − 120) ÷ (1 − 0.90) = (135 − 120) ÷ 0.10 = 150. You need 150 more likes, with no new dislikes, to hit the target.
FAQ
What counts as a good like to dislike ratio? A 4:1 ratio (80% positive) is the usual floor for "good." Above 9:1 (90%) is treated as strong audience approval.
Why does the calculator round extra likes up? A fractional like is not possible. Rounding up guarantees the target percentage is met or exceeded.
What if I have zero dislikes? The ratio is undefined as a division, so the calculator labels it "No dislikes" and still returns a 100% positive rating.
Does the goal planner assume no new dislikes? Yes. It tells you the minimum likes needed if every future rating is positive. Any new dislikes will raise the number of likes required.
