Enter the maximum stress (N/m^2) and the total surface area (m^2) into the Maximum Mass Calculator. The calculator will evaluate and display the Maximum Mass.

Maximum Mass Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Maximum Mass.

Mmax = S * A / 9.81
  • Where Mmax is the Maximum Mass (kg)
  • S is the maximum stress (N/m^2)
  • A is the total surface area (m^2)

To calculate a maximum mass, multiply the maximum stress by the surface area, then divide by 9.81.

How to Calculate Maximum Mass?

The following example problems outline how to calculate Maximum Mass.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the maximum stress (N/m^2).
    • The maximum stress (N/m^2) is given as: 425.
  2. Next, determine the total surface area (m^2).
    • The total surface area (m^2) is provided as: 30.
  3. Finally, calculate the Maximum Mass using the equation above:

Mmax = S * A / 9.81

The values given above are inserted into the equation below and the solution is calculated:

Mmax = 425 * 30 / 9.81 = 1299.69 (kg)

Example Problem #2:

For this problem, the variables needed are provided below:

maximum stress (N/m^2) = 785

total surface area (m^2) = 65

This example problem is a test of your knowledge on the subject. Use the calculator above to check your answer.

Mmax = S * A / 9.81 = ?
