The NCAA formula is uncapped. Target mode solves its linear yardage term and rounds up to a whole official yard.

NCAA Passer Efficiency Formula

The NCAA college passer-efficiency rating combines passing yards, completions, passing touchdowns, interceptions, and attempts. Its compact form is:

NCAA Rating = (8.4Y + 100C + 330TD - 200INT) / (A)
  • Y is official passing yards.
  • C is pass completions.
  • TD is passing touchdowns.
  • INT is interceptions thrown.
  • A is pass attempts.

The Four Official Factors

The NCAA manual also presents the formula as completion percentage plus yards per attempt multiplied by 8.4, plus touchdown percentage multiplied by 3.3, minus interception percentage multiplied by 2.0. The calculator displays each contribution so the final rating can be audited.

NCAA Rating vs. NFL Passer Rating

The two systems are not interchangeable. NCAA efficiency uses the linear college formula shown above and does not impose the NFL formula’s component caps. The same stat line therefore produces different numbers in the two systems.

Solving for Passing Yards

Target mode keeps attempts, completions, touchdowns, and interceptions fixed, then rearranges the yardage term:

Y = (Target × A - 100C - 330TD + 200INT) / (8.4)

The result is rounded upward to a whole official yard, and the calculator recomputes the rating at that rounded total.

Official NCAA Example

The NCAA manual’s sample line is 98 completions on 166 attempts for 1,567 yards, 16 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Evaluating the compact formula at full precision gives 161.7036, which this calculator displays as 161.70. Summing the manual’s separately printed two-decimal factors gives 161.71. Both approaches display 161.7 to one decimal; the small hundredth-point difference comes only from intermediate rounding.

Validation Rules

Completions cannot exceed attempts, passing touchdowns cannot exceed completions, and interceptions cannot exceed non-completed attempts. Attempts must be greater than zero because every factor divides by attempts.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Every input must come from the same official player or team scope.
  • The rating summarizes box-score passing outcomes; it does not directly include sacks, rushing, opponent strength, down, distance, or game situation.
  • The formula is uncapped, so unusual small-sample stat lines may produce very high or negative values.
  • Target yardage isolates one variable and is not a prediction of future performance.
