Yards Per Attempt Formula
Passing yards per attempt, commonly abbreviated YPA, divides official passing yards (Y) by official pass attempts (A):
The NCAA passer-efficiency instructions use this same yards-per-attempt quantity before multiplying it by 8.4 as one component of the college rating.
Why Attempts, Not Completions?
YPA evaluates production across every official pass attempt, including incomplete and intercepted passes. Dividing by completions instead calculates yards per completion, which answers a different question and will normally be higher.
Plain YPA vs. Adjusted Passing Metrics
Plain YPA uses only gross passing yards and pass attempts from the intended scope. Adjusted yards per attempt adds a touchdown bonus and an interception penalty. Adjusted net yards per attempt also accounts for sacks. NCAA passer efficiency combines YPA with completion, touchdown, and interception percentages. These metrics should not be labeled interchangeably.
Finding the Yardage Needed for a Target
With T representing the target YPA and A the pass attempts, target mode rearranges the formula:
Because an official total is recorded in whole yards, target mode takes the ceiling of the exact entered decimal multiplied by attempts. It does not use a floating-point tolerance. Achieved YPA and margins are display approximations; the whole-yard threshold is exact.
Example
A passer with 1,567 yards on 166 attempts has 1,567 divided by 166, or approximately 9.44 yards per attempt. In target mode, 8.5 YPA across 35 attempts requires exactly 297.5 mathematical yards, so at least 298 official passing yards are needed.
One-Attempt Sensitivity
The result card shows what happens if the next official attempt gains zero yards or ten yards. This is especially useful in small samples, where one play can move the average more than it would over a full season.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Passing yards and attempts must cover the same player or team and the same set of games.
- The formula does not evaluate down, distance, opponent, air yards, yards after catch, touchdowns, interceptions, or game situation.
- For plain NFL player YPA, do not subtract sack yardage from the passer’s passing total or add sacks to pass attempts. Team net passing totals use a different convention; select the intended scope consistently.
- Negative official passing-yard totals are mathematically valid, although uncommon over a large sample.
