How the Normalized Power Calculator Works
Normalized Power weights variable efforts more heavily than a simple average. This page accepts constant power blocks, expands them to one-second samples, and follows the transparent rolling-average method.
For every second beginning at second 30, it averages the trailing 30 seconds, raises that average to the fourth power, averages all fourth-power values, and takes the fourth root.
Formula and Method
Formula: NP = [mean((30-second rolling average power)^4)]^(1/4)
The method uses only complete trailing 30-second windows. Average power and work still use every entered second, including the first 29.
Choosing the Right Inputs
Enter one line per constant block as watts, seconds. For example, 250,300 represents five minutes at 250 W. Include recoveries and zero-power coasting blocks if they were part of the analyzed period.

Understanding Your Results
Normalized Power leads, followed by average power, variability index, duration, block count, and mechanical work.
NP rises above average power when hard surges create substantial fourth-power weighting. A steady ride produces NP equal to average power after the first full window.
Worked Example
A steady 1,200 seconds at 200 W returns 200 W NP and variability index 1.000. The included mixed 20-minute example averages 165 W and produces about 209 W NP.
Common Mistakes
Do not omit recoveries, enter minutes where seconds are required, use sparse instantaneous readings as constant blocks, or compare timelines with different start and end trimming.
Assumptions and Limitations
This is a simplified manual timeline, not a FIT-file parser. It assumes exact one-second sampling and constant power within each block. TrainingPeaks states NP is generally invalid for physiological interpretation below 20 minutes, and device edge handling can differ.
