Enter the offset distance, diameter of the conduit, and diameter of the bend into the calculator to determine the offset bend length.

Offset Bending Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the offset bend.

OB = (2 * A) - (0.577 * D) - (3 * d)

Variables:

  • OB is the offset bend length (inches)
  • A is the offset distance (inches)
  • D is the diameter of the conduit (inches)
  • d is the diameter of the bend (inches)

To calculate the offset bend, multiply the offset distance by 2. Subtract the product of 0.577 and the diameter of the conduit from the result. Then subtract three times the diameter of the bend from the result.

What is an Offset Bending?

Offset bending is a process used in metalworking where a material, typically a sheet or tube of metal, is bent in two places to create an “offset” or a “Z” shape. This technique is often used in plumbing, electrical work, and other construction projects to allow materials to bypass obstacles or to fit into specific spaces. The size of the offset is determined by the distance between the two bends.

How to Calculate Offset Bending?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Offset Bending using the formula: OB = (2 * A) – (0.577 * D) – (3 * d).

  1. First, determine the offset distance (A) in inches.
  2. Next, determine the diameter of the conduit (D) in inches.
  3. Next, determine the diameter of the bend (d) in inches.
  4. Use the formula OB = (2 * A) – (0.577 * D) – (3 * d) to calculate the offset bend length (OB) in inches.
  5. After inserting the values of A, D, and d into the formula, calculate the result.
  6. Finally, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Offset distance (A) = 10 inches

Diameter of the conduit (D) = 4 inches

Diameter of the bend (d) = 2 inches
