Legal balls = 6 × complete overs + extra balls; decimal overs = legal balls / 6

The Dot Separates Overs and Balls

Cricket scorecards commonly write an incomplete over as O.B. The number before the dot counts completed overs; the single digit after it counts additional legal balls. Thus 12.4 means twelve complete overs plus four balls. Its value in decimal overs is 12 + 4/6, or about 12.666667.

Convert Overs to Balls

Keep Legal balls from cricket notation selected and enter the scorecard notation. Multiply the completed-over count by six, then add the extra balls. For 12.4, this gives 12 × 6 + 4 = 76. Whole-over entries such as 12 are accepted and mean the same as 12.0. Zero converts to zero.

Convert Balls Back to Overs

Select Cricket notation from legal balls and enter the total legal-ball count. Integer division by six gives complete overs; the remainder gives extra balls. For 77 balls, 12 complete overs account for 72 balls and five remain, so the cricket notation is 12.5. The result includes both components and decimal overs.

Why 12.6 Is Rejected

In normalized six-ball notation, the extra-ball digit can only be 0 through 5. After six more legal balls, the completed-over count increases by one. Accordingly, 12.6 should be recorded as 13.0. Entries such as 12.40, 12.05, scientific notation, negative values, or ordinary decimal-over fractions are rejected to prevent accidental interpretation.

Add Partial Overs through Balls

Convert each amount to balls before adding it. For example, 4.4 is 28 balls and 3.3 is 21 balls. Together they are 49 balls, which converts to 8.1 overs. Adding the displayed numbers as decimals would give 7.7, which is not valid normalized cricket notation.

Use Decimal Overs Only Where Appropriate

Arithmetic formulas for run rate or economy can divide by decimal overs, provided the conversion is done correctly. For example, 24 runs from 3.4 overs uses 22 balls, equivalent to 3.666667 decimal overs. Using 3.4 as a denominator would give a different, incorrect rate. Working directly in balls avoids that conversion error.

Legal Balls and Scorebook Counts

A wide or no-ball does not advance the standard legal-ball count even though the delivery can add runs. This converter takes a legal-ball total already established by the scorer. A batter’s balls faced is a distinct recorded statistic and should not automatically be substituted for team legal balls.

Assumptions and Limits

The tool uses standard six-ball overs and nonnegative whole ball counts up to one billion. It does not model historical eight-ball overs or revise an umpire’s recorded over count. For a competition with different playing conditions, use its specified convention. Displayed decimal overs are rounded to six decimal places.
