Potatoes Per Person Formula
The calculator runs in two modes. Both use the same per-person portion as the base value.
How much to make:
Total lb = (Adults + 0.5 * Children) * Portion * (1 + Extra)
How many it serves:
Adult Servings = Total lb / (Portion * (1 + Extra))
Potato count from weight:
Count = ceil(Total lb / Size lb)
- Adults: number of adult eaters
- Children: counted as half an adult portion
- Portion: pounds of raw potato per adult, set by dish and serving size
- Extra: 0, 0.10, or 0.15 buffer for buffets or leftovers
- Size lb: 0.3125 lb small, 0.46875 lb medium, 0.625 lb large
The “How much to make” mode multiplies your headcount by the chosen portion, adds the buffer, then divides by potato size to give a count to grab at the store. The “How many it serves” mode reverses that math so you can plug in what is already on the counter and see how many plates you can fill.
Typical Portions and Potato Counts
Portion sizes are raw weight per adult. Children eat about half.

Examples and FAQ
Example 1: Thanksgiving mash for 10 adults and 4 kids. Standard portion is 0.5 lb per adult. Effective people = 10 + (4 × 0.5) = 12. With a 10% buffer, total = 12 × 0.5 × 1.10 = 6.6 lb. That is about 14 medium potatoes.
Example 2: You have 5 lb of potatoes for roasting. Standard roasted portion is 0.42 lb. Servings = 5 / 0.42 = about 11.9 adult plates with no buffer.
How much potato per person for mashed? Plan on 1/2 lb of raw potato per adult for a standard side. Bump to 2/3 lb if mash is the headline starch.
Do children really count as half? For most family meals, yes. Teenagers should be counted as adults, and toddlers can be skipped entirely.
Should I add a buffer for a buffet? Add 10% for self-serve and second helpings. Add 15% if you want planned leftovers.
How many baked potatoes per person? One medium potato per adult is standard. Offer one large or two small for bigger appetites.
