Enter the area to be covered and the desired depth of rubber mulch into the calculator to determine the amount of rubber mulch needed; this calculator can also evaluate any of the variables given the others are known.

Rubber Mulch Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the amount of rubber mulch needed for a given area:

RM = (A * D) / C

Variables:

  • RM is the amount of rubber mulch needed (in cubic feet)
  • A is the area to be covered (in square feet)
  • D is the desired depth of rubber mulch (in inches)
  • C is the coverage rate of the rubber mulch (in cubic feet per square foot per inch)

To calculate the amount of rubber mulch needed, multiply the area to be covered by the desired depth of rubber mulch. Then, divide the result by the coverage rate of the rubber mulch.

What is a Rubber Mulch?

Rubber mulch is a type of mulch derived from recycled tires. It is used in gardens and landscapes as a protective layer over the soil to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Unlike organic mulches, rubber mulch does not decompose and therefore, lasts much longer. It is also heavier, which makes it less likely to blow away or wash away during heavy rain. The rubber material is non-porous, so it does not absorb water, allowing it to pass through to the soil beneath.
