The following formula estimates the free weight squat equivalent (FW) based on the weight used on a Smith Machine (SM). Because Smith Machines reduce stabilization demands (and can differ in rail angle, friction, and counterbalance), the relationship is not fixed. A practical “starting point” factor often falls somewhere around 0.75–0.90; the example below uses 0.85.

FW = SM × CF

Variables:

  • FW is the Free Weight Squat weight
