Sunscreen Formula
The calculator uses one of three formulas depending on the mode you select.
Beach / Pool Day:
Total oz = (A × 1.0 + K × 0.5) × Apps × Activity
Vacation Trip:
Total oz = (A × 1.0 + K × 0.5) × Apps × Activity × Days
Daily Use:
Total oz = People × Days × Coverage
- A = number of adults
- K = number of children
- Apps = number of applications, calculated as ceil(hours / 2)
- Activity = 1.0 (low), 1.25 (moderate), or 1.6 (high)
- Days = trip length
- Coverage = 0.15 oz (face/neck/hands), 0.35 oz (add arms), or 0.6 oz (add legs)
The 1 oz per adult figure follows the dermatology standard: roughly one shot glass to cover an exposed adult body. Children use about half. Reapplication is set at every 2 hours, which is the standard for water-resistant SPF after sweating or swimming. The activity multiplier accounts for extra product lost to towels, water, and sweat.
Reference Tables
Per-application amounts by body area:
| Area covered | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| Face and neck only | 0.07 oz | 0.05 oz |
| Face, neck, arms | 0.35 oz | 0.20 oz |
| Face, neck, arms, legs | 0.60 oz | 0.35 oz |
| Full body (swimsuit) | 1.00 oz | 0.50 oz |
Quick estimates for a typical 6 oz bottle:
| Scenario | Lasts about |
|---|---|
| 1 adult, full-body, 1 day at the beach (6 hr) | 2 days |
| Family of 4, beach day (4 hr, moderate) | less than 1 day |
| 1 person, daily face and arms only | 17 days |
| 2 adults, 7-day vacation (4 hr/day, moderate) | 3 to 4 bottles needed |
Example and Notes
Example: Two adults and two kids spend 6 hours at the pool with moderate activity.
- Apps = ceil(6 / 2) = 3
- Adults: 2 × 1.0 × 3 × 1.25 = 7.5 oz
- Kids: 2 × 0.5 × 3 × 1.25 = 3.75 oz
- Total: 11.25 oz, or 2 × 6 oz bottles
Why so much? Most people apply about a quarter of the recommended amount. Under-application drops actual SPF protection sharply. The numbers here assume you apply correctly.
Does sunscreen expire? Yes. Most products are good for 3 years unopened. Check the printed date and toss anything that has separated or changed color.
What about spray sunscreen? Sprays are harder to dose. Spray until skin glistens, then rub in. Plan on running through them faster than lotion, so add 20 to 30 percent to the totals above.
TSA limits: Carry-on bottles must be 3.4 oz or smaller. For longer trips, pack larger bottles in checked luggage or buy on arrival.
