Tiles Per Square Meter Formula

The main relationship is total tiles equals total area multiplied by tiles per area. The calculator can rearrange this formula to solve for the missing value when you enter the other two values.

Total\ Tiles = Area * Tiles\ Per\ Area
Tiles\ Per\ Area = Total\ Tiles / Area
Area = Total\ Tiles / Tiles\ Per\ Area
  • Total Tiles is the number of tiles needed for the area.
  • Area is the surface area being tiled, converted to square meters for the calculation.
  • Tiles Per Area is the tile density, such as tiles/m², tiles/ft², tiles/cm², or tiles/yd².

If you enter total area and tiles per area, the calculator finds the total number of tiles. If you enter total tiles and total area, it finds the tile density. If you enter total tiles and tile density, it finds the area covered.

The calculator converts area units to square meters before calculating. It then converts the result back to the unit you selected when needed.

Area and Tile Density Unit Conversions

These are the conversion factors used to compare different area units in the same calculation.

Area unit Equivalent in square meters
1 m² 1 m²
1 ft² 0.092903 m²
1 cm² 0.0001 m²
1 yd² 0.836127 m²

Tile density units are also converted to tiles per square meter before the formula is applied.

Tile density unit Equivalent in tiles/m²
1 tile/m² 1 tile/m²
1 tile/ft² 10.7639 tiles/m²
1 tile/cm² 10,000 tiles/m²
1 tile/yd² 1.19599 tiles/m²

Example Calculations

Example 1: Find the total number of tiles

You have an area of 12 m² and a tile density of 25 tiles/m².

Total\ Tiles = 12 * 25 = 300

You need 300 tiles before adding any extra for cuts, breakage, or waste.

Example 2: Find tiles per square meter

You used 450 tiles to cover 18 m².

Tiles\ Per\ Area = 450 / 18 = 25

The tile density is 25 tiles/m².

FAQ

How do you calculate tiles per square meter?

Divide the total number of tiles by the area in square meters.

Tiles\ Per\ Square\ Meter = Total\ Tiles / Area\ in\ m^2

For example, 200 tiles over 8 m² gives 25 tiles/m².

Should you round the number of tiles up?

Yes. You cannot usually buy part of a tile, so round the final tile count up to the next whole tile. For real projects, you should also add extra tiles for cuts, breakage, and layout waste.

Does grout spacing affect tiles per square meter?

Yes. Grout spacing slightly increases the effective size of each tile, so it can reduce the number of tiles needed per square meter. If you already know the tile coverage from the package, use that value because it may include the recommended grout joint.
