Type-Token Ratio Formula
The following two example problems outline the steps and information needed to calculate the Type-Token Ratio.
Variables:
- TTR is the Type-Token Ratio
- TYP is the total number of types
- TOK is the total number of tokens
Divide distinct word types by total token occurrences in the same nonempty sample. Counts must be positive integers with types no greater than tokens. The ratio is on a 0–1 scale; multiply by 100 for percent. Compare similarly sized samples using the same counting rules because raw TTR depends on sample length.
How to Calculate Type-Token Ratio?
The following steps outline how to calculate the Type-Token Ratio.
- First, determine the total number of types.
- Next, determine the total number of tokens.
- Use TTR = TYP / TOK for the ratio, or TTR (%) = TYP / TOK * 100 for percent.
- Finally, calculate the Type-Token Ratio.
