Years to Months Formula
Months = Years × 12
Months = (Years × 12) + Extra Months
Years = Months ÷ 12
- Years – number of years, whole or decimal
- Extra Months – additional months on top of the whole years
- Months – total months in the duration
Every calendar year contains exactly 12 months, so the conversion is exact regardless of leap years. Decimal years are allowed, for example 1.5 years equals 18 months.

Worked Examples
Example 1: Decimal years. Convert 3.5 years to months.
3.5 × 12 = 42 months.
Example 2: Mixed duration. A loan term of 2 years and 6 months.
(2 × 12) + 6 = 30 months.
Example 3: Reverse conversion. An 18-month lease in years.
18 ÷ 12 = 1.5 years, or 1 year and 6 months.
FAQ
Does this account for leap years? No adjustment is needed. A year always contains 12 months, even when one of those months has 29 days.
How do I handle a number like 2.4 years? Multiply by 12. 2.4 × 12 = 28.8 months, which is 2 years and roughly 4.8 months (about 2 years, 4 months, 24 days).
Why does 0.0833 years equal 1 month? Because 1 ÷ 12 = 0.0833. Spreadsheets and finance tools often display short periods this way.
